Saturday, March 9th, 2019 – Lake Cypress Springs
The Ray Hubbard Bass Club held our second members only tournament of 2019 last Saturday March 9th at Cypress Springs Lake. Light rain fell early in the day but the wind was blowing right from the start. About 9:30 a large thunderstorm blew in with heavy rain, wild wind gusts and thunder and lightning. I hope our members did like we did and took cover in an open boat house. It lasted about 20 minutes. After that, the wind behind the storm was fierce and moving around the lake became treacherous, despite the relatively small size of Cypress. Most everyone I talked with at the end of the day said they had never seen it that rough. Fishing was pretty good before the storm, but we heard from many teams that bites got very scarce after the storm. Despite the wild weather, 45 teams came out to fish with us. Most teams weighed fish but the average size was not what most were hoping for. When all our little green friends had been to the scales, the team of Adam Vesely and Taylor Gauntt came out on top with a five fish stringer that weighed 13.78 pounds. That included big bass of the event, a 5.29 hawg.
I would like to say thanks to Tournament Directors Russell Olds who handled registration and live well checks in the morning. Thanks as well to Paul Spann, Shellye Crawford and James Crawford for helping with weigh in. On a personal note, I and my partner Chris would like to say thank you to James Sharp and Brian Brooks for pulling Chris’s truck out of the mud bog I got it stuck in. Our next tournament is Saturday April 13th at Lake Fork. We will be going out of Popes Landing. Hope to see you there!
